What is sideloading an app? The meaning for betting apps

Sideloading means putting an app on your phone without the official store, usually by opening an APK file downloaded from a website or received in a chat. On Android 8.0 and higher, you first have to give that source, such as your browser, permission on the Install unknown apps settings screen.

Sideloading is installing an app on your phone from somewhere other than its official store. On Android it usually means opening an APK file that a browser, a file manager or a messaging app has saved. Google uses the word itself: its Android developer verification page describes a flow that lets power users sideload apps from unverified developers.

Android's unknown-apps setting

Android stops installs from places other than a trusted first-party store, such as Google Play, until you opt in. On Android 8.0 (API level 26) and higher, that opt-in covers one source at a time. You open the Install unknown apps screen, pick the app doing the installing, such as Chrome, and turn on Allow app installs.

Google's documentation says you can change this setting for a particular source at any time. Phones on Android 7.1.1 and lower have a single Unknown sources switch instead, or allow one install at a time. Google also notes that some network providers do not let users install apps from unknown sources at all.

The prompts and scans you meet on the way are covered in betting APK downloads and what Android warns about.

Example: one sideloaded betting app

Example: you download a betting APK in Chrome and tap the finished file. Android pauses and asks you to let Chrome install unknown apps. If you agree, Chrome keeps that permission after the install, so you can switch Allow app installs off again for Chrome once you are done.

Why it matters for betting apps

Google Play's policy for gambling apps asks for a valid licence covering every country where the app is offered. It also requires the app to block areas the licence does not cover. A sideloaded betting app bypasses that gate, so tying it to a licensed operator is up to you, with the steps in the guide on verifying that a betting app is licensed.

Google has also launched Android developer verification, a program that verifies developers' identities. Its timeline lists 30 September 2026 for certified devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand, and global expansion in 2027. Kenya is not among those four first countries.

Questions people ask

Is sideloading a betting app against the law in Kenya?

Neither the Gambling Control Act, 2025 nor the 2026 Conduct of Gambling Operations Regulations deals with how an app is installed. What they do cover is the operator. Regulation 102(2) of those Regulations treats any website, application or electronic system offering gambling without the required licence as an illegal gambling platform, so check that the operator behind a sideloaded app is licensed.

Can I switch off the unknown-apps permission after installing?

Yes. Google's Android documentation says users can change the Allow app installs setting for a particular source at any time. Search your phone's Settings for Install unknown apps, choose the browser or messaging app you used, and turn the switch off. That source then cannot install further APK files until you allow it again.
