What is an APK file? The meaning for betting apps
An APK, short for Android package, is an archive file with an .apk suffix that holds what an Android app needs to run. It is the file an Android phone installs. A betting APK from a website or chat arrives outside Google Play, so the store's licence rules for gambling apps have not been applied to it.

An APK, or Android package, is an archive file with an .apk suffix. Google's Android documentation describes it as the file that holds the contents an app needs at runtime and that Android devices use to install the app. When a betting operator offers an "APK download", it is handing you that installer file directly, outside any app store.
How an APK differs from a store install
Apps from Google Play also reach your phone as APKs, but developers do not upload them in that form. They upload an Android App Bundle, an .aab publishing format that a phone cannot install, and Google Play generates and serves an APK optimized for your device.
For betting apps the bigger difference is the rulebook. Google Play distributes a real-money gambling app only after an application process, and only from a developer licensed in each country the app serves. A file passed around a chat group has gone through none of that.
Android will not install such a file until you allow its source. The guide to what Android warns about with betting APK downloads explains that step.
Example: checking where an APK came from
Example: someone in a chat group shares a link to a file ending in .apk that claims to be a betting app. Before you open it, look at the address the file comes from in your browser's address bar or download list, and note its domain.
Then find the brand on the regulator's list of licensed operators at gra.go.ke, under the column headed Trading Name, and read its entry in the DOMAINS column. If the file came from a file-sharing site, a shortened link or any domain the list does not show for that brand, nothing ties it to the licensed operator. The app check of licensed operators and their listed domains sets out the same columns.
The full method is in the guide on how to verify a betting app is from a licensed operator. The install step itself has its own entry: what sideloading means.
Questions people ask
Does Google Play install an APK too?
Yes. Developers upload an Android App Bundle to Google Play, and Google Play uses it to generate and serve an APK optimized for each device, so your phone downloads only the code and resources it needs. The file type is the same. What differs is the route, because a Play install has passed the store's policies, including its licence rules for real-money gambling apps.
What does Android do before it installs an APK from a website?
Android holds back any install that does not come from a trusted first-party store until you agree to it. From Android 8.0 onward, that agreement is given to one source at a time, such as your browser, on the Install unknown apps screen. Google Play Protect, which is on by default, may also ask to send an unknown app to Google so it can be checked.
